FIFA World Cup
This is kind of cool. The 2014 FIFA World Cup Final Match is going to be filmed and shown in a panoramic, 360 degree view. Apparently, a special Ultra High Definition ‘Omni Cam’ was developed by Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute scientists and engineers in Berlin. The viewing will be available in 2016 at the new FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich. I would love to see and experience that!
The Golden Boot
FIFA has also announced its 10 names for the Golden Boot award for the most outstanding player in the World Cup.
They have nominated four Germans, three Argentinians, one Brazilian, one Colombian, and one Netherlands player. Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller have to be considered the favorites, and Neymar may win on sentimentality. Had he not had his vertebra cracked and been able to continue playing, he may have won based on performance.
One conspicuously missing name is Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal did not even make it out of the first Group Play stage.
The list is created by the FIFA Technical Study Group and the winner will be announced after Sunday’s final. Uruguay’s Diego Forlan won the Golden Boot award in 2010.
Carmelo Anthony is staying in New York
What another surprise…Carmelo Anthony is staying put. He just announced that he will be returning to the New York Knicks. He will be signing a contract for five years and for more than $129 million.
Anthony let all of the other teams know, including the Chicago Bulls who were hot and heavy after him. The Bulls must now regroup but at least they know. The Bulls were only able to offer him four years and $75 million and they were working on a sign and trade deal that would only have allowed them to up the offer to $90 million.
I’m not surprised that Anthony wanted to stay in New York, especially with the Phil Jackson factor and influence. His belief in Jackson’s ability to return the Knicks to prominence had to have played a major part in his decision.
Miscellaneous Coach Hindsight musings
LeBron James and Cleveland
LeBron James is moving back to Cleveland to play again for the Cavaliers and all is forgiven. At least in Cleveland it is. The biggest news there is the son of the owner asking his father if it was okay to wear his LeBron James jersey again. Too cute. The real story is will Cleveland be able to provide the supporting cast and bench that will allow LeBron to lead the Cavs to an NBA championship.
Michelle Wie misses the cut at the Women’s British open
Michelle Wie just won the national championship at Pinehurst less than one month ago and has now missed making the cut at the Women’s British Open. She hit a first round 75 and a second round 78. For those who follow Michelle Wie, her career has been a series of ups and downs such as this.
Jeremy Lin is now a Los Angeles Laker
Hello Kobe! Jeremy Lin is now a Los Angeles Laker! The Houston Rockets traded Lin for a first round draft pick. Lin was about to make $15 million in his final year of his contract with the Rockets. The Rockets want Chris Bosh from the Miami Heat and Chandler Parsons. Based on their salary cap room to be able to sign Bosh for the maximum and to match Parson’s offer sheet, they had to move Lin off of their books.
I love the move of Lin for Kobe and the Lakers. Lin starting at point guard will give the Lakers the consistency that they sorely needed last year due to a Steve Nash who is just getting older. Since we are talking about the Lakers, will Pau Gasol stay or leave? He is such a wonderful fit in the Lakers starting line up, and he knows the system and he knows Kobe Bryant but now that Carmelo Anthony is staying with the New York Knicks, the Chicago Bulls may want Gasol and might be making a serious play for him.
